Spring Color Phase Black Bear are periodically spotted while working on our private ranch.

I spotted a good looking auburn colored black bear meandering across the hillside.  Winter was short lived this year and our bears are already on the move.

Right now they’ll concentrate on eating fresh green shoots and early flowering birds beak but before long they’ll be hitting baits!

Idaho has a healthy black bear population and a high percentage of color phase bears to boot.  This comes from natural selection.  Bears that live in semi open country can tend to be lighter in color because they are tougher to spot than black ones.  Over time the lighter colored bears that live pass their genes down and before you know it you have a lot of color phase bears.
